Why Should I Become a Professional Engineer?

Engineers working on plans, 1959

Becoming a Professional Engineer is a credential that can greatly enhance your engineering career. Here are a few reasons:

Legal Requirement

Like a lot of other highly skilled professions (medicine, law, etc), engineers are also regulated by certain laws. Many engineering professions require a PE, and by definition it is required to legally practice and provide engineering services. This is because only a professional engineer can sign and seal official engineering documents for public and private clients.

For example, many civil service companies, government positions, and public utility companies require a PE for specific jobs. If you ever wanted to open your own firm or become a consulting engineer, you will have to be a licensed professional engineer. In the academic sector, colleges may require you to be a professional engineer to work on the engineering faculty or hold a distinguished title.

Career Enhancement

Much like going to graduate school or getting a certification, a PE license is also a career advancement tool to advance in your career in engineering or management. Yes, whether your career path takes you on a technical or manager track, the license can be a key credential in helping you climb the corporate ladder. This is because many employers in those industries require licensure for advancement to senior engineering positions. Many companies also offer bonuses or salary increases for getting a license.

Prestige and Credibility Indicator

As a professional engineer you will be recognized as just that; a professional. In such highly technical industries, professional engineers have a level of respect from colleagues within the engineering community because it shows they have the knowledge and professional experience to practice engineering. The PE license is a credential that represents competency, ethics, continuing education, and professionalism.

And Finally, Personal Satisfaction

Getting licensed is a worthwhile accomplishment you should be proud of. And don’t forget, like M.D. or M.B.A, you can add P.E. after you name. You know that will make you feel good.
